  • Interested in learning more about science, technology, engineering and math? Girls and families of all ages are invited to SCI's Girls in Science Festival presented by Flint Hills Resources to explore a variety of STEM careers and connect with female role models. Try hands-on activities at festival booths, hear personal “STEM Stories” and register for workshops conducted by scientists and SCI Staff. Festival activities are included with SCI general admission.

Workshops - included with general admission

    11:00-11:45 am

    • Make a Space Bot (Grades 2-5)with Cyclone Space Mining
Design and engineer your own take-home brush bot. Cardinal Space Mining Club will share their experience competing at NASA. Then it's time to design, make, test and improve your very own robot!

    • DNA Extraction (Grades 6-8)with Kemin Industries
Extract and visualize a strawberry's DNA in this hands-on lab! DNA is the blueprint of life, and understanding it at the molecular level helps us improve the quality of life for people all around the world!

    1:00-1:45 pm

    • Density Dynamics (Grades 2-5)with Flint Hills Resources
Learn about density as we make a lava lamp with household supplies. You'll even get to make your own Cartesian Diver that you can take home!

    • Plant Doctor (Grades 6-8)with Corteva Agriscience
Learn about microorganisms that make plants sick (and how scientists keep plants healthy!) with hands-on activities. Use science to help cure plant diseases and keep plants happy. (You'll even get to enjoy treats from the plants you save!)

    2:00-2:45 pm

    • Plant Doctor (Grades 2-5)with Corteva Agriscience
Learn about microorganisms that make plants sick (and how scientists keep plants healthy!) with hands-on activities. Use science to help cure plant diseases and keep plants happy. (You'll even get to enjoy treats from the plants you save!)

    • Leather Tanning (Grades 6-8)with Dakotah Rose Taxidermy
How does a delicate animal hide turn into a preserved piece of leather? Learn the science of leather tanning, as you explore the science of pickling.

    3:00-3:45 pm

    • Animal Forms (Grades 2-5)with Dakotah Rose Taxidermy
What's inside a taxidermy animal?(Hint: it's usually foam!) What goes under the skin plays a huge role in making an animal look real. Looking at an animal's anatomy, movement and carcass, helps taxidermists create a new body for an animal!

    • Basic Soldering (Grades 6-8) with Jewels Academy
Have you ever wondered how calculators, computers and gaming devices are built? It's all thanks to soldering! In this workshop, you'll get to create a basic circuit with an electrical and computer software engineer.

    • Listen to the Earth (Grades 3-12)with SCI
Explore the emerging field of sound ecology in this interactive planetarium program. Embark on a mission to investigate the dramatic sounds of Costa Rica's rainforests, Hawaii's coral reefs and Mongolia's vast grasslands. Learn about the tools that scientists use to record and analyze sounds. Explore basic acoustics through interactive activities and incredible slow-motion footage. Discover what soundscapes tell us about the health of our planet.

  • Meet and get the chance to touch some of SCI’s resident reptiles and amphibians.

  • Locate constellations and planets, and hear myths of the night sky in this live planetarium program. Program and location subject to change.

  • Tour the Seven Wonders of the World as well as some of the greatest wonders of our universe and beyond! Narrated by Sean Bean. Program and location subject to change.

  • Travel through time to witness the Space Race between the USA and USSR, and see the status of space travel today. Sponsored by NASA. Program and location subject to change.

  • Get chills and thrills from dry ice and liquid nitrogen!

  • From things that glow to things that explode, this program is a real blast!

  • Discover how international teams are attempting to be the first to land a robotic spacecraft on the Moon as they compete for the Google Lunar XPRIZE. Program and location subject to change.
