Reopening FAQs: Camps
Attending camp is a beloved summertime tradition. In a typical summer, SCI provides more than 2,000 camp experiences on a variety of topics ranging from chemistry to rocketry and invention to dissection.
In our reopening plan, SCI Summer Camps will operate virtually for the first two weeks (June 8-12 and June 15-19) and plans to move to onsite operations starting June 22.
What will happen with SCI Summer Camps?
SCI Summer Camps will operate virtually for the first two weeks (June 8-12 and June 15-19) and plans to move to onsite operations starting June 22.
What precautions are being taken?
- All staff will wear facemasks and complete health screenings each day
- Drop-off and pick-up will be restricted, and all students and parents will complete temperature screenings each day
- Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will not be permitted entrance
- Students will be strongly encouraged to wear facemasks
- Camp experiences will be designed to accommodate for physical distancing and limited use of shared materials
- To limit camp sizes, capacities have been reduced and remaining spaces are limited. Any available spaces can be found in the camp directory.
Can I get a refund for the SCI Summer Camp I signed up for?
Yes, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for refund assistance. During this time, refunds have been taking an average of 14-20 days to fully process.
SCI Camps has a stated refund policy which allows for a refund at any time prior to two weeks of the camp starting, retaining a small processing fee of $30/half day camp or $60/full day camp. Given the current situation, we will be providing a full refund for cancellations during the month of June (Weeks 1-4), including the processing fee. At this time, if you wish to cancel your camp registration for camps during July-August (Weeks 5-10), the standard refund policy still applies.
Instead of a refund, can I transfer the amount paid to an SCI gift card?
Yes, if you would rather keep the amount you paid for an SCI Summer Camp as an SCI gift card, you can do so. SCI gift cards can be used for camps, classes, memberships, admission and in the A-ha! Store.
What will happen with the iEARTH camp?
The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department has closed all shelters and restrooms in public parks until June 15, 2020. The week of June 15, iEarth camp will operate virtually. After that, as long as parks facilities are closed, iEARTH will take place at SCI.
iEARTH camps will continue to have a focus on the outdoors - however, without being in a park setting, the camp will look a bit different and some traditional programming of iEARTH may need to shift.
As more information from the city is released, we will continue to update you with locations.
Can I enroll in an SCI Summer Camp?
To limit camp sizes, capacities have been reduced and remaining spaces are limited. Any available spaces can be found in the camp directory.
