SCI receives $10,000 from Variety – the Children's Charity

  • Monday October 8, 2018

The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) has received a $10,000 grant from Variety – the Children's Charity to fund Sensory Friendly Hours, a program designed for families with children on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing disorders.

During Sensory Friendly Hours, SCI staff adjust the exhibit environments and provide space for those visitors who may be overstimulated. Throughout the facility, sound is reduced and attendance is limited.

The program serves a purpose greater than simply providing access to SCI. As one participant's parent noted, "These types of events do so much more than just give kids a chance to experience the center without judgment. It allows the families to connect with other families and build relationships."

SCI's Sensory Friendly Hours are offered on the first Saturday of the Month from 8:30-10:00 am, October through May. Admission is free for children with autism and other special needs as well as their families and caregivers. More information is available at www.sciowa.org/sensoryhours
