Spark curiosity and wonder through play!
Pint Size Science (PSS) classes provide stepping stones for early learners to explore science topics and help parents/caregivers feel more confident being a STEM coach for their child.
Workshops are held for children, ages 3–5 years old with a caring adult, every Thursday from 9:15–10:15 a.m. during the month of April.
Class Details
In celebration of SCI hosting the traveling exhibit The World’s Largest Dinosaurs, our PSS workshops will focus on dinosaurs. SCI staff will facilitate the age appropriate learning activity for the children while also giving the caring adults supporting prompts to actively support the learning process.
Upcoming Workshops:
April 6 - Can you Identify these Dinosaurs? Dinosaurs — just like all animals — have different diets such as meat-eater, plant-eater, or both! Together we’ll talk about how we know what the different dinosaurs ate and explore their diets to identify them.
April 13 - Can you Help the Dinosaur Find its Food? Exploring dinosaurs through robots! Together we will use the knowledge we found with what different dinosaurs ate and use that to work with robots and help our robot dinosaur find their food.
April 20 - Can you Find what Dinosaurs and Modern Animals have in Common? Dinosaurs aren’t around anymore, but we have animals that had similar features. Together we’ll explore how different animals relate to dinosaurs with some of our own animal critters here at the Science Center of Iowa!
April 27 - Can you Excavate like a Paleontologist? Dinosaurs disappeared millions of year ago! So how do we know what happened to them? Fossils, of course! Together we will discuss the theories of how the dinosaurs died and discover what happened to them after through excavation!
Pricing:
- Individual Workshop: $19 per child; $10 for SCI members
- All Workshops: $76 per child; $40 for SCI members
*parent/adult is free and the ticket price also includes admission to SCI for the day.
The science behind the PSS program:
Pint Size Science classes are designed to reflect current brain research, which shows that academic learning is directly connected to emotion. Young children need a caring adult to share their early STEM experiences, and Pint Size Science classes provide opportunities for young children and their parent or caregiver to learn together.
