What is the Innovation Lab?
The Innovation Lab is a dynamic maker space where creativity meets technology. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll gain hands-on experience in robotics, laser cutting, AI, coding, and more. Our mission is to spark problem-solving, fuel creativity, and foster collaboration for learners of all ages. Join us to explore, experiment, and bring your ideas to life in an environment where innovation has no limits!
Open Hours
Open Hours in the Innovation Lab is a drop-in event that is included in the price of admission to the Science Center of Iowa. Open Hours are typically held on Fridays, from 1:00-3:00 pm, and Saturdays, from 10:00 am-Noon and 1:00-3:00 pm.
The Open Hours theme changes weekly and ranges from sewing to Lego to robots! Showcasing an array of high-tech to low-tech activities, all ages and skill levels can find something to enjoy during Innovation Lab’s Open Hours.

Workshops
Student Workshops
When the Innovation Lab is not open to the public, we run private workshops for schools and clubs. We even take these workshops on the road using our mobile Spark Lab.

Adult Workshops (Ages 18+)
The Innovation Lab hosts Adult Workshops on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7:00 pm. Space is limited, and attendees must pre-register to participate in the event. Ticket prices vary depending on the workshop.
3D Printing Adult Workshop – Tuesday, April 8, 5:30–7:00 PM
After this crash course in 3D modelling at The Science of Iowa’s Innovation Lab, we’ll 3D print and mail you your original design! Join us after-hours to create a 3D design at this adult-only (18+) event. No 3D modelling experience required. Registrants should have the ability to work independently on complex projects. Workshop fee is $20 per registrant.
Laser Cutting Adult Workshop – Tuesday, May 13, 5:30–7:00 PM
Unlock your creativity with laser cut keychains at The Science of Iowa’s Innovation Lab. Join us after-hours to design and laser cut your own wood or acrylic keychain at this adult-only (18+) event. No laser cutting experience required. Registrants should have the ability to work independently on complex projects. Workshop fee is $20 per registrant.
Team-Building Workshops
Team Building Workshops in the Innovation Lab are highly customizable to fit the size, skills, and interests of your group. Come together and exercise your creativity though a group activity led by our innovation lab staff.
