Science Center Of Iowa Receives $10,000 Grant From Bayer Fund

Donation to help expand STEM education during summer camps

  • Wednesday July 5, 2023

The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) announced today it received a grant for $10,000 from Bayer Fund, which will be used to acquire new technology enabling students in SCI’s summer camps to promote their creativity, and sharpen their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. This technology will also help them understand and appreciate how participating in technology creation impacts themselves and the world around them.

“We use coding robots to do so much more than teach students to code,” said Rob Burnett, SCI’s Vice President of Science Learning. “From understanding how rovers explore Mars, creating art, or understanding the water cycle, these robots help us bring STEM concepts to life. Our hands-on approach helps make the learning process more engaging and exciting, and students are more likely to retain the information they learn. Today’s kids will need to understand the rules that guide coding languages and the Science Center of Iowa can be a place where they access these materials in an informal learning environment.”

“Through Bayer Fund’s giving, we’re enabling and strengthening organizations that are working to make real, sustainable impacts in their local communities across the United States,” said Al Mitchell, President of Bayer Fund. “Programs like SCI Camps inspire future generations for careers in the high-demand STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field, and we’re proud to provide our support.”

In 2022, Bayer Fund awarded more than $13.4 million to over 2,700 charitable and nonprofit organizations to help address essential needs in Food and Nutrition, STEM Education and Health & Wellness. Since 2017, nonprofit organizations across the U.S. have received nearly $90 million.
