Pint Size Science

Spark curiosity and wonder through play!

Pint Size Science (PSS) classes provide stepping stones for early learners to explore science topics and help parents/caregivers feel more confident being a STEM coach for their child.

Workshops are held for children, ages 3–5 years old with a caring adult, from 9:15–10:15 AM on Thursdays in February.

February Workshops - Thinking Machines

Discover how machines learn, guess, and play—just like you!

Each week brings a new theme packed with discovery, creativity, and hands-on fun!

February 5: Brains vs. Bots – Who thinks faster — you or a machine? Explore the differences between our brains and computers and learn how both try to make sense of the world.

February 12: Teach the Machine – How do machines learn? Machines learn through examples, data, and feedback — not memorization.

February 19: All Around Us – Discover where smart tech hides in everyday life. AI powers everyday tools — from phones to games — but we often don’t notice it.

February 26: Invent-a-Bot – Build and train your own robot! Imagine how robots help others, and what jobs are good for robots.

Cost per student:

  • Members = $15
  • Non-Members = $25

Cost for parents/caring adult: No additional cost for parents that register for the workshop*

* Only those that are registered, both students and parents/caring adult, can attend the workshop. Children younger than 3 attending the workshop do not need to be registered. Registered participants receive admission to the Science Center of Iowa for the remainder of the day.

The science behind the PSS program:

Pint Size Science classes are designed to reflect current brain research, which shows that academic learning is directly connected to emotion. Young children need a caring adult to share their early STEM experiences, and Pint Size Science classes provide opportunities for young children and their parent or caregiver to learn together.
